TSIP-2145 Pearl Harbor
On Dec. 7, 1941—"A day that will live in infamy"—Japanese bombers attacked the large naval base at Pearl Harbor, as well as several U.S. Army bases on Hawaii's island of Oahu. The aerial strike, carefully planned and war-gamed for months before this day, was ordered in violation of international rules of diplomacy, for Japan had not yet declared war against the U.S. The attack was far from the knockout blow the Japanese had counted on. On Dec. 8, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, addressing a joint session of Congress, promised the American people that they would achieve "absolute victory" over Japan. That vow was fulfilled four years later, when Japan surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945. This is the story of what happened in between—four years that changed the course of American history.
